A recent Gallup poll asked people to rank the honesty of people in various occupations, from nurse to engineer to politician. While the most notable survey result was that most people ranked the honesty of Members of Congress as very low, an interesting additional result was that dentists were ranked in the top five most honest fields.
People trust their dentists, which actually isn’t a huge surprise.
When it comes to honesty and ethical standards, nurses were ranked the highest, with 85 percent of voters saying nurses had very high or high levels of honesty and ethical standards. Pharmacists and engineers also topped the list.
Then came dentists, with 62 percent of respondents saying that dentists had very high or high ethical standards and honesty. Only 4 percent of respondents said dentists had a low level of honesty.
This result may be due in part to the very high level of training required to become a dentist in America. It also may be due in part to how advanced the field of dentistry has become, in both instruments and techniques. Both general and cosmetic dentists are among the most highly trained, effective and trustworthy professionals in America. They are considered more honest even than college teachers and police officers, the poll found.
In contrast, poll respondents said they didn’t consider senators, bankers, stockbrokers or car salespeople to be especially honest, or considered them to be very dishonest.
Even though dentists are generally an honest bunch, that doesn’t mean that all dentists are created equally. Make sure you find a dentist and a dentist’s office that has the latest instruments and the most experienced staff.
After all, your smile is a very important part of who you are. Trust the person you let work on your teeth.
