Teeth Whitening

Whitening is the process of whitening teeth using a custom fit tray and bleaching agent. This involves having impressions taken from which laboratory fabricated custom vinyl trays are made. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 3 hours, or overnight. The entire process takes 2-3 weeks of daily use.

Three different strengths of gel may be used, however the higher the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. Teeth whitening can also be completed in one appointment in our office. Typically, the bleach is applied by one of our highly trained staff members and left on the teeth for two periods of 20 minutes each.  For optimal results after an in office bleaching, the trays should be used every day for 2 weeks and then about once or twice a month to maintain whiteness. In office bleaching appointments vary in length from 1-1.5 hours.

Internal Bleaching

Internal bleaching is the process of whitening a tooth from “the-inside-out”. Typically, a tooth that has had a root canal is much darker than the surrounding teeth. Most teeth are crowned following completion of a root canal. If, however, there is minimal damage to the tooth following the root canal, the tooth can be lightened through this process.

What Causes the Discoloration of Teeth?

Our teeth will never maintain the brightness that they had when we were children. Darkening, yellowing and stain is simply part of aging. After all, we use our teeth multiple times a day. If you think about it, they are an amazing part of the body for simply enduring such heavy use.

But certain activities can speed up the yellowing or staining of teeth. Our teeth whitening procedures at APEX can help repeal this damage, but it is good to know what to avoid to keep your teeth externally white in the first place.

  • Smoking
  • Foods with tannins
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Carrots
  • Oranges

Many things can cause internal discoloration of a tooth. the use of antibiotics as a child, exposure to high levels of flouride, tetracycline, restorations, root canal issues and trauma are all thought to be reasons behind internal discoloration.
